Wiley Mission was founded in 1931 on the principles of faith, compassion, and service, driven by the vision of Reverend John Hackett. Rescued from the grip of alcoholism, Rev. Hackett found a new purpose as a Methodist Episcopal minister, serving at Wiley Church at 3rd & Beckett Streets in Camden, New Jersey.
The mission’s roots trace back to the Great Depression when Rev. Hackett and his wife Jenny noticed children scavenging through trash for food. Deeply moved, Rev. Hackett challenged his congregation to take action, and within a week, they were serving hot breakfasts to 75 children daily.
As economic hardship of the Great Depression continued, Wiley Mission expanded its services to provide shelter and meals for approximately 250 individuals each day. By 1934, the mission had grown significantly in caring for individuals and families in need. Recognizing the dire need for healthcare, Wiley Mission established a clinic to provide medical assistance to impoverished families.
By the early 1940’s, Wiley Mission began embracing new ways to reach and support the community. Rev. Hackett leveraged the power of radio, broadcasting messages that secured donations and resources, including a farm in Cherry Hill, NJ, which was later relocated to Marlton.
A pivotal moment in Wiley Mission’s history came when an elderly woman, known as Mother Johnson, donated her life savings to start a home for the aged. Inspired by her generosity, Rev. Hackett committed to providing housing for seniors in need. This endeavor led to the purchase of a 55-acre property in Marlton for $5,500. Tragically, Rev. Hackett passed away shortly after the move in 1940, but his vision endured.
Over the decades, Wiley Mission flourished under the leadership of Rev. Cecil P. Gilmore Sr. and Rev. Virginia H. Gilmore, who dedicated over 40 years to its growth.
By 1955, the Hackett Building was constructed, serving as a residential healthcare facility. Wiley continued to expand, adding new buildings, including the Aldersgate Building (1980) and Wiley Village (1987), transforming into a Continuing Care Retirement Community.
By the 1990s, the Wiley campus had grown into a thriving residential community, offering independent living, residential healthcare, and skilled nursing services. The establishment of the Health Care Center in 2005 further reinforced its commitment to providing high-quality care. Demand for Wiley’s services remained strong, often resulting in multi-year waiting lists.
In 2003, Wiley Christian Adult Day Services was founded, extending its reach to individuals requiring daytime supervision and care. The program, based in Pennsauken, NJ, provided vital services to over 200 people daily, particularly those from Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties. Wiley also launched a Partial Care Program to support individuals struggling with mental health challenges.
Wiley Mission remains a 501(c)(3) non-profit church corporation, balancing our mission with a commitment to financial stewardship. Grounded in faith and driven by a mission to nurture and sustain the well-being of its residents, Wiley defines success by the lives it has had a positive impact on.
Today, Wiley Christian Retirement Community serves approximately 300 residents, offering independent living homes and residential and skilled nursing services. Through its church, preschool, summer camp, and behavioral health services, Wiley Mission continues to fulfill its calling to support people of all ages with love and compassion.
From its humble beginnings in a small church in Camden to a thriving multi-faceted community in Marlton, Wiley Mission stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, generosity, and service. As it continues to evolve, Wiley remains steadfast in its mission to provide comfort, dignity, and support to those in need, ensuring that Rev. Hackett’s vision lives on for generations to come.
