Wiley Walk – September, 2025

Greetings to all the Wiley folks on this mail list. Wow! Time flies. Here it is October and the September Wiley Walk edition is going out today. I missed a couple of events because of scheduling conflicts (mine). Normally I’d offer to take a pay cut. But there is no pay to cut. Summer seemed to disappear overnight. It’s with cold, stiff fingers I’m pounding away on the keyboard to write this report.

A Fall Concert happened on September 6th in the church sanctuary. Mark performed his “Best Little Country Show North of Nashville”. It was a fund raising event for the Wiley Home Auxiliary. Not sure if anyone tossed loose change into Mark’s guitar case up on stage, though.

Sally introduced Mark to the large crowd that turned out for the show.

His photos “came out real good” because the light in the sanctuary is always better during the day than at night.

He performed classic country, bluegrass and gospel music. . . along with some of his original songs.

Betty attended the show. I admire her independent spirit. There was a merchandise table set up in the narthex. I first met Betty six years ago at the Mister Softee truck outside the main building entrance. She ‘drove’ there on her electric scooter from Lilac, I think to get her treat before the truck would get to her court way later : > )

There is a new community garden shed coming. Parts of the old shed are piled off to the side. Garden resident bosses Joe, Jodi and Paul met on site with the some plant services guys to talk details.

Then before ya knew it another Wiley Home Auxiliary fund raiser happened at McDonald’s on Route 70. Three volunteers . . . Carol, Kristin & Marion . . . took charge helping serve tables. Donna learned she’d be paying for Richard, too, since she had the purse. The menu board is tough to read, so the volunteers pitched in to help. Robin wasn’t buying whatever Richard was saying about his crop of lima beans in the community garden. Table service from the kitchen is done by the numbers.

Phil & Merrie were waiting at table 18. Charles & Robin had already been served. $10 for my dinner meal was a reminder that we parents used to give three kids the McD’s treat-night-out for less than $10, total. But that was fifty years ago!

How about a group photo of Team McDonald someone said.

Marlton resident Leroy Homer, a flight crew member on United Flight 93, was a victim of the 9-11 terrorist attacks in 2001. I had visited the Flight 93 Memorial site in Pennsylvania and used some of those photos to make this wide banner print. I placed the print over the Arbutus Court sign the morning of the memorial service.

The service began at 8:46 a.m. the moment of the attacks.  Thuan documented the gathering.

The scene at the Cecil Gilmore Memorial Garden on Arbutus.

Tom Laird played. Chaplain Tom, Pastor Sam and Pastor Bill prayed with those who gathered.

Joe, who as a Red Cross volunteer, worked at the ground zero site in NYC starting on Sept. 12th. I’ll donate my Leroy Homer photos to a local memorial organization.

There is Betty arriving at the Sept 12th Wiley Home Auxiliary General Council meeting in the Church Chapel. Sitting room only, seems. Maryanne  read the devotion written by Bill. CEO Gary Gilmore was first to outline recent business and future plans.

This is my idea of a “Rogues Gallery”, although only two rogues participated in giving reports; Sally, Marian, Alicia, Lynn, Laura, Craig, Carol, Lorraine, Kristin and Paul.

Another crowd photo on the way out? Why not!

On September 15th Carol Falk, aka The Queen, celebrated her 83rd birthday. About 63 or so of them with me (counting a couple dating years during her last two years at Trenton State College . . . now named the College of New Jersey).

Walking With Wiley Health Care started on Fridays. It’s a way to get health care residents out of the building for a stroll through the beautiful Wiley community. Volunteers (group above) were recruited to get behind (pun intended) this activity, which will begin at 11 a.m. New volunteers can call Laura at 856-983-0411, extension. 241.

No Wiley Walk report would be complete without approaching flowers with the camera and a close up lens. I just happened to have both.

I’m pretty sure these were made along Balsam. Name these flowers and their parts on your own because I am a shooter not a flower knower!

Mimi helps Richard guard the flowers, and the street, and the driveway and her own porch.

Saturday Sept 27th was the annual Marlton Fair on Main Street. Not only was the large crowd on Main but it also spilled over down two side streets.

Marlton residents Makeasha & Marcel took a break with Thunder outside Allora on Main. Booth 35 was a no show.

Annette brought her face painting skills to the event.

Dog Bandas up top, Dog bow ties below. It’s all about the colors when walking with a camera.

The best baby books ever. They are called Indestructibles, perfect for babies and toddlers. We buy them on Amazon, where else! Great entertainment when being pushed around in a stroller.

For sure I thought this sign meant for me to get a photo of the pumpkin. On this same stroll I liked a sophomore at Cherokee, warming up. More musician classmates were across the street warming up.

Here’s bus driver Bob Schules offering his best new mustache Clark Gable look. The last Monday of the month is The Coffee Hour day. This time at Stacks on Rt. 38 in or near Moorestown. The bouncy Wiley bus pulled up and before unloading all riders Activities Director Laura hopped off and go check-in.

There is a hint of Covid in the air. Server Heather Steen handled our group of 15.

Betty  is in this report for the third time, focused on the menu choices. I always get the same thing . . . plain waffle, side of sausage and I bring my real maple syrup repackaged into Cracker Barrel bottles. The yellow smiley face container is my morning pill cocktail. We might all be ‘old’ but gallons of healthy age appropriate coffee (mostly regular) get served.

While strolling up Snapdragon Lane I got tipped off to a garden photo op at this  house. Turned out to be a good tip. Mostly. Full bloom had come and gone but there was a possibility to grab something down low and close up. Close up means get down. Get down means struggle to get up. So, while down it made sense to try for two versions before the wobbly/grunting getting up started.

Finally, the baby included in each report. This one is a new baby coming into our family right here in South Jersey. She’s my daughter-in-law’s first grand child. I have already put in my reservation for hands-on baby time starting in January.

As for real babies here now, I thought a composite group of them would finish off The September Wiley Walk just fine. Any day is made a better day just by

looking at babies.

Cheers.   J O N –
