The Hidden Health Benefits of Laughter: Why Joy Is Serious Medicine for Seniors

A good laugh can brighten a room, lift our spirits, and bring people together. But laughter may do more than simply make us feel good. Research suggests that laughter, joy, and positive social connections can contribute to our emotional and physical well-being—something that can become especially important as we grow older.

At Wiley, we believe caring for people means caring for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. That includes creating opportunities for friendship, fellowship, purpose, faith, and, yes, plenty of laughter.

Laughter Is Good for the Body

Think about how you feel after a genuine laugh. Your face relaxes, your mood changes, and for a moment the worries of the day seem a little lighter.

Laughter can help relieve tension and may reduce the body’s stress response. It also engages the heart, lungs, and muscles and can leave us feeling more relaxed afterward. While laughter certainly doesn’t replace good medical care, exercise, proper nutrition, or adequate rest, it can be one small part of a healthy lifestyle.

For older adults, those simple moments of enjoyment can be especially valuable.

Joy Is Good for the Mind

Aging brings many blessings, but it can also bring change. Retirement, the loss of loved ones, health challenges, or changes in independence can sometimes lead to loneliness, worry, or isolation.

This is where relationships and shared experiences become so important.

Laughing with a friend over lunch, enjoying a funny story, participating in a group activity, or simply spending time with people we care about can help lift our mood and remind us that we are not alone.

Sometimes the greatest benefit isn’t the laughter itself—it is the connection behind it.

Laughter Builds Community

Have you ever noticed how quickly laughter can bring a group of people together?

At Wiley, we see the importance of community every day. A conversation over a meal, a group activity, a church gathering, music, celebrations, or an unexpected funny moment can create connections that make a community feel like home.

These moments matter.

As people age, maintaining meaningful relationships is an important part of overall well-being. Being surrounded by people who know us, care about us, and share life with us provides something that cannot be measured simply by a medical chart.

It provides belonging.

 Joy Is Also Spiritual

For Wiley, wellness goes beyond physical health. Spiritual well-being has always been an important part of our mission.

Scripture frequently reminds us of the importance of joy. Proverbs 17:22 tells us:

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” — Proverbs 17:22

Those words still speak powerfully today.

Christian joy does not mean that every day is easy or that we ignore life’s difficulties. Rather, our joy is rooted in something deeper—the knowledge that God is with us through every season of life.

Sometimes that joy appears during worship or prayer. Other times, it may appear around a dinner table, during a conversation with a friend, while playing a game, or through the laughter of grandchildren.

Joy can be found in both the sacred and the ordinary.

Creating More Moments of Joy

We don’t need elaborate plans to bring more laughter and joy into our lives. It can begin with simple things: sharing a favorite story, calling an old friend, listening to music that brings back good memories, spending time with grandchildren, joining a group activity, attending worship, or simply allowing ourselves to laugh when something is funny.

And perhaps just as importantly, we can look for opportunities to bring joy to someone else.

A smile, an encouraging word, an invitation to join the table, or taking a few minutes to listen can make a tremendous difference in another person’s day.

Caring for the Whole Person

At Wiley, our mission says:

“We are called by Christ; To nurture and sustain; Young and Old; with love and compassion.”

Nurturing and sustaining people means more than meeting physical needs. It means recognizing the importance of relationships, purpose, faith, dignity, fellowship, and joy throughout every stage of life.

Medicine can treat many things. Good nutrition and physical activity help strengthen our bodies. But there is also something powerful about sitting among friends and hearing a room filled with laughter.

So today, hold onto the wisdom of Proverbs 17:22: “A cheerful heart is good medicine…”

Find a reason to smile. Share a story. Call a friend. Laugh with someone you love. And look for opportunities to bring a little joy into someone else’s day.

Sometimes the simplest moments of joy can be among life’s greatest blessings
